Why ATS Filtering Hits New Grads Hardest

New grad resumes fail ATS filters for three consistent reasons. First, they describe placements and co-ops using generic language: "assisted with," "helped to," "supported the team", instead of the action-verb phrases employers configure into the system. Second, they bury the education credential at the bottom when 86% of entry-level data analyst postings in Ontario use degree verification as the first knock-out filter. Third, they skip the tools section entirely, leaving out the software keywords that represent the most direct signal ATS is scanning for.

Certifications Ontario Entry-Level Employers Screen For

Credential requirements appear early in ATS filters. If your qualification is not listed prominently, automated screening may exclude your application before a recruiter sees it.

  • Post-secondary degree required: 86% of entry-level data analyst postings in Ontario (115 of 134 postings). Put your degree in the header or at the top of your education section -- never at the bottom.

Tools to Know and List

Across both Ontario datasets, these tools appeared most often. You do not need to be an expert in all of them -- but you should list any you have touched through coursework, placements, or independent learning.

For data and analytics roles (134 postings, May 2026): Microsoft Excel appears in 80% of postings. Power BI in 19%. Python in 13%. SQL in 10%. Tableau in 7%. SAP in 18%.

For accounting and finance roles (200 postings, March 2026): Excel appears in virtually every posting. QuickBooks appears in approximately 65% of postings. Xero in 15%. SAP in 18%.

Universal across both role types: Microsoft Teams and the full Microsoft 365 Suite (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint) are mentioned in the majority of postings in both datasets. List this cluster as "Microsoft 365 Suite" in your skills section.

Power Verbs and Resume Bullet Formulas

These are the action verbs Ontario employers used most often in entry-level job postings -- which means these are the words their ATS is trained to recognize. Use them to replace weak language in your bullet points.
